The signature of ‘development’ stands blatantly against the natural world. It is more challenging for us to see this – those of us who live in the ‘developed’ world – as it is what surrounds us now.
And the photo gallery during the UN Earth Summit in Brazil – showing photographs of three generations of Brazilians who have been born and raised in a massive ‘dump’ that is so vast, it spans the horizon.
This … is the victory and the glory of our ‘development’? Countless ‘things’ we discard, when our use of them is no longer justified? Strewn out, as ‘waste’?
How can we treat Gaia, Mother Nature, the supplier of our bounty, with such distaste? How can we disrespect her so blatantly? How have we become this numb, that we don’t notice what we are creating, what we are affecting, what we are doing, and promptly take active steps to course correct? How have we become so arrogant? Where is our humility? Where is our grace?
It is pollution that is the unarguable monster we have created. Without attending to this – global warming or no global warming – all of us will soon have un-potable water, toxic soil that results in all sorts of diseases, and air that we don’t dare breathe.
