One of my favorite stories of ‘leadership’ and of ‘change’ is of the Wright Brothers. I’m an abstract storyteller, so please forgive me if the ‘details’ of this story are not historically absolutely precise!
Imagine yourself … As if you were alive, in the town where the Wright Brothers lived, when they began publicly expressing their ‘visions’ that a silver bird could fly.
Ha! Most people surely mocked them, exclaiming, “A silver bird has never flown. It cannot fly! You are insane. Ha!” And indignantly, these people simply passed them by, turning their arrogant noses upwards.
Then … there were the tiny handful of people who said, “Wow! You are onto something big! You are amazing! This is incredible! I can’t wait to see you fly this thing!”
Then there were the financiers, the ones who recognized just how big this discovery would become in terms of cash and influence. They backed it – this silver bird and the meticulous and perseverant inventing that the Wright Brothers themselves hunkered down and committed to – despite ridicule, despite, hardship, despite trials and tests of their acumen, their patience, and their faith.
And lo and behold, silver birds do now fly.
Who on this blue green planet has not either flown in one, seen one fly, or heard of them?
Does anyone still doubt that ‘silver birds’ can fly?
